The Master Where Classmates Become Colleagues — and Career Partners for Life

Third in a Series on Pixel’s International Master in European Project Planning and Management

FLORENCE, ITALY — The first two articles in this series examined why Pixel’s International Master in European Project Planning and Management has become such a reliable route into international careers: a guaranteed three-month internship placed inside one of the programme’s 60+ partner organisations across 20+ European countries, and a practitioner-led curriculum that has helped 85% of alumni go on to work as European project managers worldwide. Ask the graduates themselves what actually changed the trajectory of their careers, however, and many point to something that does not appear on a transcript: the people they trained alongside.

Since its first edition in 2012, the Master has brought together more than 250 alumni from 50 countries, taught by trainers drawn from across Europe. That international mix, participants say, is not a side benefit of the programme — it is one of the main reasons it works.

A Classroom That Mirrors the Job

European project management is, by definition, teamwork across borders: consortia typically bring together universities, public authorities, NGOs and companies from several countries, each with its own working style and priorities. Pixel’s Master reproduces that environment before students ever set foot in a real project. Coursework is delivered in English by trainers from multiple European countries, and participants study alongside peers from 50 different nationalities, working through practical simulations and project-based exercises together rather than in isolation.

The result is a form of preparation that goes beyond technical knowledge. Learning to negotiate a shared budget, align on a common work plan, or reconcile different administrative cultures with classmates from a dozen countries is, in effect, a rehearsal for the international partnerships graduates will manage professionally within months.

When Classmates Become Colleagues

For some alumni, the connections made during the programme have outlasted the internship altogether. Patrizio R., a History graduate from Italy who was hired as a European project manager immediately after his internship, later co-founded an association based in Spain together with a fellow student from the Master, going on to work with them on several successful projects. He now works as Project Manager at Luiss University in Rome.

Others describe the same dynamic with their supervisors and host organisations. Ani A., a Physics graduate from Armenia, credits her three-month internship with opening a lasting professional relationship: after a successful placement, her supervisor invited her to continue the collaboration, adding a year of hands-on EU project writing and management experience to her CV before she moved into her current role as a Project Manager in Novara, Italy.

For Guillermo Luis C., an Engineering graduate from Paraguay, the professional relationships built during the programme translated into immediate demand: he had three job offers in hand before even finishing his internship, and now works as a Project Manager at Magneti Marelli in Milan.

A Network Built Into the Structure of the Programme

This networking effect is not incidental — it is engineered into how the Master is designed. Every participant completes a guaranteed three-month internship as Assistant European Project Manager inside one of the programme’s 60+ partner organisations, spread across 20+ European countries and including institutions such as BUPNET in Göttingen, APRE in Rome, Kaunas University of Technology, the University of Ljubljana, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and Inova+ in Porto. Placements are matched to each participant’s profile and career interests, meaning every graduate leaves not only with practical experience but with direct professional contacts inside a real European organisation, in a country and sector relevant to their ambitions.

Trainers add a further layer to this network. Every instructor is an active EU project professional — proposal writers who have won multiple EU grants, evaluators who have assessed hundreds of applications, financial managers experienced in preparing for audits, and coordinators running multi-million euro consortia. Participants are trained not by academics describing the field from the outside, but by professionals currently working inside it, alongside whom many go on to collaborate professionally.

Where the Network Leads

The combined effect of an international cohort, practitioner trainers, and a guaranteed internship inside a genuine European partner network is reflected in where alumni end up working. Graduates of the Master are now employed across:

International organisations and European agencies

Universities and research centres

Public authorities at national and regional level

Private companies and consulting firms

NGOs and civil society associations

In each case, the professional network built during the five-month programme — classmates, trainers and host organisations alike — continues to open doors long after graduation.
