The South East Doctoral Training Arc (SEDarc) is offering Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)-funded PhD studentships for September 2027 entry, providing opportunities for talented researchers in the social sciences to undertake doctoral study at one of six participating universities in London and South East England.
The studentships are open to UK and international students and include UK tuition fees and a stipend at the UKRI rate. For successful overseas applicants, the SEDarc institutions will cover the difference between UK home and international tuition fees, except for the University of Reading.
The SEDarc deadline is 29 January 2027 at 16:00 GMT, although applicants must first complete the institutional application process, and each participating university has its own deadline and procedure.
Participating Universities
Students can be based at one of six higher education institutions
University of Kent
Kingston University
University of Reading
Royal Holloway, University of London
University of Surrey
University of Sussex
SEDarc also works with non-higher-education partner organisations to strengthen the research and training opportunities available to doctoral students.
SEDarc Research Pathways
SEDarc’s doctoral training model combines advanced research skills training, placements and an individual research project within one of five interdisciplinary, challenge-led pathways:
Living Sustainably
Healthy Thriving Communities
Inclusive Economic Growth
Secure, Effective, & Trusted Institutions
Transformative Technologies for Society
These pathways provide a framework for research addressing major social, economic, environmental, institutional and technological challenges.
Funding and Benefits
The standard SEDarc PhD lasts 3.5 years full-time, including a three-month placement, or the part-time equivalent.
The funding package covers
UK tuition fees
A UKRI-rate stipend
Three-month placement
Research and skills training
Individual doctoral research
For eligible students without a relevant social-science Master’s degree, potential funding for an approved Master’s course within the SEDarc consortium
The UKRI has not yet announced the 2027/28 tuition fee and stipend rates.
For reference, the 2026/27 rates were
UK tuition fees: £5,238
UKRI stipend: £21,805
London-weighted stipend: £23,805 where applicable
The 2027/28 figures may therefore differ.
Funding for International Students
SEDarc accepts international applications.
For successful overseas applicants, the SEDarc institutions will cover the difference between UK home tuition fees and international tuition fees.
However, an important exception applies: the University of Reading does not cover this difference.
International applicants should therefore carefully check the financial arrangements of their chosen institution before applying.
Ring-Fenced Scholarships
SEDarc is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion throughout the doctoral journey.
The programme states that it will reserve up to three ring-fenced scholarships for eligible home students from certain Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups.
Applicants interested in these ring-fenced studentships should review the specific eligibility criteria published by SEDarc.
Who Can Apply?
The SEDarc PhD studentships are open to
UK students
International students
Applicants working across the social sciences
Prospective PhD researchers who meet the academic requirements of their chosen institution and programme
Applicants who do not already hold a Master’s degree in the social sciences may also be eligible for funding to undertake an approved Master’s course within the SEDarc consortium.
Eligibility for this additional Master’s funding depends on the relevant requirements.
How to Apply
Applicants cannot apply directly to SEDarc without institutional nomination.
Students must first be nominated by one of the six SEDarc universities.
The application process therefore involves
Choose one of the six participating SEDarc institutions.
Identify a suitable doctoral research area and SEDarc pathway.
Contact the SEDarc administrator at your chosen university.
Follow that institution’s application process and deadline.
Complete the institutional stage of the application.
Obtain nomination from the university.
Submit the SEDarc studentship application by the SEDarc deadline.
Because the six universities have different institutional deadlines and procedures, applicants should contact their chosen university as early as possible.

Application Deadline
The SEDarc studentship application deadline is
29 January 2027 at 16:00 GMT
Applicants should note that this is the SEDarc deadline. The university they choose will have its own earlier institutional deadline and application process.
Applicants should therefore not wait until January 2027 before contacting their chosen institution.
Important Funding Notice
SEDarc’s ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership is subject to a mid-term review in 2026.
According to the programme information, the number of studentships may be revised depending on the findings of the review.
Allocations for the 2027 cohort are expected to be confirmed around January 2027.
Conclusion
The SEDarc ESRC PhD studentships provide funded doctoral study opportunities for UK and international researchers in the social sciences, with placements, research training and interdisciplinary research pathways forming part of the programme.
Students can apply through one of six participating universities: Kent, Kingston, Reading, Royal Holloway, Surrey or Sussex.
The standard PhD is 3.5 years full-time and includes a three-month placement. Funding covers UK tuition fees and provides a UKRI-rate stipend, while arrangements for international tuition fees vary by institution.
The main SEDarc application deadline is 29 January 2027 at 16:00 GMT, but applicants must first meet the separate institutional deadline and nomination requirements of their selected university.
