Overview

Are you passionate about contributing to sustainable industrial processes? Have you ever wondered how manipulating particles, drops, and bubbles impacts industries like energy, environment, or health? If so, the Erasmus Mundus MSc Program on Multiphase Systems may be your perfect opportunity.

The MULTIPHASE program welcomes applicants worldwide. It offers an Erasmus Mundus master’s in the rapidly growing field of Multiphase Systems, aiming to train a new generation of industrial experts, engineers, and researchers to advance the chemical industry through sustainable processes, a circular economy, and digital tools.

The program is funded by the European Union and led by a consortium of three esteemed institutions: École des Mines de Saint-Étienne (France), Politecnico di Torino (Italy), and Technical University of Munich (Germany), enhanced by partnerships with 17 industrial companies and 12 universities globally.

The curriculum focuses on the physical chemistry of multiphase systems, eco-efficient chemical technologies, and innovative modeling techniques, including High-Performance Computing and Machine Learning. It tackles significant energy, materials, health, and environmental challenges.

Students will develop versatile skills, preparing them for careers in innovative chemical companies, top-tier PhD programs, or entrepreneurship. The program includes lectures, Application Seminars, Winter Schools, a Green-Line research project, and master’s thesis internships.

Upon successful completion, graduates will receive three degrees:

  • Diplôme National de Master in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from IMT – Mines Saint-Étienne
  • Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Chimica e dei Processi Sostenibili from Politecnico di Torino
  • MSc in Materials Science and Engineering from the Technical University of Munich.

Selection Process

The selection process and criteria are as follows

Step 1: Administrative Evaluation

Verification of eligibility and document completion.

Step 2: Academic Evaluation

Assessment of academic scores and relevant experiences. Each eligible application receives a “written application score” based on these criteria:

Criterion

Weight

Scientific Background

15%

Academic Records

40%

University Quality

10%

Practical/Research Experience

15%

External Assessment

10%

Motivation

10%

Note: The scores are used to create a ranking, from which the Selection Committee forms a shortlist.

Evaluation of Oral Interviews

Shortlisted candidates will participate in a video conference interview, which includes a 10-minute presentation followed by a 15-20-minute Q&A. The “oral interview score” will be assessed on the following criteria:

Criterion

Weight

Motivation for MULTIPHASE

30%

Alignment of student projects with program objectives

20%

Critical Thinking Skills

20%

Scientific Background & General Knowledge

20%

English Language Proficiency

10%

Academic Ranking

An Academic Score will be calculated for each shortlisted candidate, weighing 50% for the written application score and 50% for the oral interview score.

Step 3: Final Ranking

The Selection Committee conducts the final admissions selection, aiming to assemble a cohort with the highest academic quality while adhering to specific constraints:

Enrollment Limits: A maximum of 35 students per edition ensures high pedagogical standards and seamless integration with other programs in Saint-Etienne, Turin, and Munich.

EMJM Scholarships: The MULTIPHASE Consortium has secured scholarship funding for the Erasmus Mundus program. The available scholarships are available as follows:

Student Category

Number of EMJM Scholarships

Programme Country Students

30

Partner Country Students (Any)

30

Partner Country Students (NDICI)

27

Partner Country Students (IPA III)

3

Notes

While applicants from all countries are welcome, those from IPA III (Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance) or NDICI (Neighborhood, Development, and International Cooperation Instrument) countries may have a higher chance of receiving EMJM scholarships, given excellent academic records.

Scholarships allocated for specific groups cannot be transferred to other groups.

To promote geographical diversity, no more than 10% of total scholarships can go to candidates from the same nationality (this rule does not apply to IPA III and NDICI scholarships). Students beyond this threshold can still enroll without a scholarship.

Step 4: Admission and Scholarship Allocation

Applications are evaluated based on the Academic Ranking, leading to one of the following admission statuses:

Selected: If the Academic Score is above the threshold, with two options

Admitted: Main list

Waiting: Reserve list

Not Selected: If the Academic Score is below the threshold

Students offered an EMJM scholarship have 72 hours to confirm participation after the Final List publication on the MULTIPHASE website

Students on the waiting list have two options

Apply as a Self-Funded Student: Submit a request to the Selection Committee to secure a place, subject to cohort limits.

Wait for an Upgrade: Students may be upgraded to the main list if a spot becomes available due to withdrawals. Note that upgrades are not based solely on rank; the Selection Committee will choose the highest-ranked student who meets the program’s criteria.

Any information or documents are suspected to be fraudulent.
