“Where do you see yourself in five years?”
Expected Duration: 1-2 mins
Sample Answer
Two years after this program, I see myself back in Kabul working as a junior lecturer and finishing a professional engineering license. By year five, I want to be teaching undergraduates while leading a small research unit on urban water systems at a university or a national agency. The exact employer may change, but the direction — building engineering capacity inside Afghanistan — will not.
Strong Example
“By year five I’m a licensed engineer leading a two-person design office in Herat, with three completed public-building projects and one junior engineer trained under me.”
Weak Example
“Honestly, it depends on the situation in Afghanistan. Maybe I will still be studying, maybe working abroad.”
How to Answer
Give a direction, not a rigid map. Committees know five years is uncertain for people of Afghanistan — they test whether your plan survives contact with reality.
Common Mistakes
- “It depends on the situation” without a plan
- Plans that only work abroad
- Unrealistic seniority (“CEO of a company”)
Follow-up Questions
- Q: What is your plan B if teaching jobs are scarce?
- Q: How does this program fit that five-year picture?
