Exchange & Fellowship Programs
Exchange & Fellowship ProgramsBeginner
“Why did you apply for this exchange program, and what do you expect to gain from it?”
Expected Duration: 2 mins
Sample Answer
I applied because the program’s focus on civic leadership matches the work I already do with youth groups in Mazar-e-Sharif. I expect three things: training in project management that our organizations lack, a network of peers across the region facing similar challenges, and first-hand experience of how community programs are run at scale. I will bring all three back into my current organization immediately after the exchange.
Strong Example
“Your entrepreneurship module directly upgrades the women’s tailoring cooperative I manage — I come to learn systems, not to sightsee.”
Weak Example
“I want to see the world and experience life abroad. It will be a great opportunity for me.”
How to Answer
Exchange programs select for multiplier effect: show what you will do WITH the experience, not just why you deserve it. Connect the program’s stated goals to your ongoing work.
Common Mistakes
- “Travel and see the world” framing
- Not knowing the program’s actual themes
- No plan for sharing knowledge at home
Follow-up Questions
- Q: What will you do in the first month after returning?
- Q: Which part of the program will be hardest for you?
