“Who is sponsoring your trip, and what do they do for a living?”
Expected Duration: 1-2 mins

Sample Answer

My sponsorship comes from two places. The scholarship covers tuition and a monthly stipend — the award letter is in my file. My uncle, who owns a hardware import business in Kabul, covers the remaining travel and settlement costs; his bank statement and sponsorship letter are also included. I can explain exactly how each cost is covered if helpful.

Strong Example

“The Fulbright program covers tuition and living; my father, a government doctor, pays only the visa fee. Documents are here — tuition letter first, family statement second.”

Weak Example

“My family will pay. We have money, don’t worry about it.”

How to Answer

Know your sponsor’s occupation, monthly income and relationship to you — officers verify consistency between your words and the documents. Hesitation here is the most common cause of refusal.

Common Mistakes

  • Not knowing the sponsor’s exact occupation or income
  • Sponsor documents that contradict your statements
  • Changing your answer when asked twice

Follow-up Questions

  • Q: How much does your sponsor transfer annually?
  • Q: Will your sponsor continue supporting you next year?
