“How do I know you will return to Afghanistan after your program?”
Expected Duration: 2-3 mins
Sample Answer
Three reasons. First, my entire family — my parents and four siblings — lives in Kabul and my role in the household is real. Second, my career plan only works in Afghanistan: I want to join the expanding construction sector, where my degree is rare and valuable. Third, I already have concrete commitments — a ministry supervisor has agreed to host my thesis fieldwork, and my return connects to an actual job market, not a hope.
Strong Example
“My father’s business is transferring a branch to me, my scholarship contract includes a two-year home-service clause, and my wife and daughter remain in Kabul.”
Weak Example
“I promise I will return. Afghanistan is my country and I love it.”
How to Answer
Officers assess “ties”: family, property, job prospects, community role. Present two or three verifiable ties calmly. Emotional promises without evidence convince no one.
Common Mistakes
- Only emotional arguments with no evidence
- Saying “I will earn a lot and settle abroad” even jokingly
- Arguing when the officer expresses doubt
Follow-up Questions
- Q: What job exactly will you return to?
- Q: Do you have family members who already migrated abroad?
