“What is the purpose of your trip?”
Expected Duration: 1-2 mins
Sample Answer
I am traveling to begin a two-year master’s program in civil engineering at [University], which starts on [date]. I have the admission letter and scholarship confirmation with me. After completing the program I will return to Afghanistan, where I have a job offer waiting at a construction company.
Strong Example
“I will start the master’s program in Computer Science at X University in September — here is my I-20 and scholarship letter. I return after graduation to work in Afghanistan’s telecom sector.”
Weak Example
“I want to go and see the country, maybe study, maybe work — I will decide there.”
How to Answer
Answer in one clear sentence, then offer the document. Consular officers spend 2-3 minutes per applicant — vagueness reads as deception. Never say “work” on a student visa.
Common Mistakes
- Rambling or giving an unprepared long story
- Mentioning work or immigration intentions
- Not knowing your own program start date
Follow-up Questions
- Q: Why this university?
- Q: What will you do during the summer break?
