“Why do you want to study in this country instead of staying in Afghanistan or going to a neighboring country?”
Expected Duration: 2-3 mins
Sample Answer
Afghanistan has talented young people but limited advanced programs in my field. This country offers a curriculum and laboratory experience that simply does not exist at home. My goal is to master skills that are transferable: I chose this program because its graduates have built institutions back in developing countries, and I intend to do the same. Studying close to home would keep me within the same constraints I am trying to overcome.
Strong Example
“I chose this program because its water-engineering lab directly matches the irrigation problems of my province, and I plan to return and work with the Ministry of Energy and Water.”
Weak Example
“Because your country is developed and life is better there. There are no opportunities in Afghanistan.”
How to Answer
Never criticize Afghanistan — committees want future contributors, not refugees from their own country. Name the specific program strength and connect it to a concrete problem back home.
Common Mistakes
- Criticizing Afghanistan or calling it hopeless
- Giving a generic answer that fits any country
- Not mentioning any plan to return or contribute
Follow-up Questions
- Q: Which specific course or lab attracted you to this program?
- Q: What problems in your field does Afghanistan face right now?
