UK Resettlement Scheme Reopens for New Referrals: Three New Sponsorship Routes for 2026–27

The UK has reopened UKRS for new referrals, with Afghan women and girls among priority groups. Learn about the new community, student and work sponsorship routes.

UK Resettlement Scheme Reopens for New Referrals

The UK Home Office has officially reopened the UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS) for new referrals, working with the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP).

The scheme provides a safe and legal route to the United Kingdom for refugees identified through established referral processes.

The government has also confirmed timelines for three new sponsorship routes involving communities, universities and employers.

Priority for Afghan Women and Girls

The UK government says around 1 in 4 referrals are expected to be for Afghan women and girls and Palestinian refugees.

This is a combined priority across these groups. It does not mean that every Afghan woman or girl will automatically qualify or be accepted.

Each case remains subject to the official identification, referral and UK assessment process.

Five-Year Path to Permanent Settlement

People who arrive in the UK through UKRS and the new sponsorship routes will be placed on a five-year path to permanent settlement.

The government says total arrivals across UKRS and the three new routes will initially number in the hundreds, with numbers expected to grow into the low thousands. An annual cap will be set.

Three New Sponsorship Routes

Community Sponsorship

Charities, non-profit organisations and community groups will be able to apply to become sponsors from October 2026.

Community sponsors will help host and support refugees in the United Kingdom.

The first arrivals through this route are expected in autumn 2027.

Student Sponsorship

UK universities will also be able to apply to become sponsors from October 2026, allowing universities to host refugee students.

The first arrivals through the student sponsorship route are expected in autumn 2027.

Important: detailed rules covering tuition fees, scholarships, language requirements and individual student selection have not yet been fully published. Applicants should not assume that the announcement guarantees a fully funded scholarship.

Work Sponsorship

Applications for companies and employers to become sponsors under the work sponsorship route are expected to open in spring 2027.

The first arrivals are expected later in 2027.

Further eligibility and matching details are expected through future official guidance.

What Support Will Sponsors Provide?

According to the Home Office announcement, sponsors under the new routes will provide:

  • accommodation
  • integration support; and
  • help finding work.

Further operational details for each sponsorship route are expected to be published separately.

Important Dates

28 September 2026: UKRS reopened for new referrals.

Before the end of 2026: First new UKRS arrivals are expected.

October 2026: Community and student sponsor applications open.

Spring 2027: Work sponsor applications open.

Autumn 2027: First community and student sponsorship arrivals are expected.

Later in 2027: First work sponsorship arrivals are expected.

Can Refugees Apply Directly?

No.

There is currently no public UKRS application form or self-submission portal for individuals.

UNHCR states that refugee resettlement is not an application-based process. Refugees are identified and assessed for resettlement through established procedures.

The UK Home Office says UNHCR and IRAP will identify and refer refugees through established processes.

No individual, agent or company can legitimately sell you a UKRS referral, quota or guaranteed acceptance.

What Should You Do?

If you are already registered with UNHCR in your host country, make sure you follow instructions issued through official UNHCR channels.

Do not pay anyone who promises to obtain a UKRS referral or guaranteed UK visa for you.

Do not submit false information or fraudulent documents.

For the new student, community and work sponsorship routes, wait for further official guidance before assuming that you meet the eligibility requirements.

ARAP and ACRS Are Different Programmes

The reopening of UKRS does not mean that ARAP or ACRS have reopened.

ARAP closed to new applications on 1 July 2025, while previously submitted applications continue to be processed.

The UK government has also confirmed that there will be no further ACRS pathways or referrals, although eligible existing cases continue to be processed.
