Criteria for University of Sheffield Scholarships

Applicants must meet the academic and English-language requirements of their chosen University of Sheffield course in addition to the scholarship requirements below. Sheffield’s minimum English requirement is generally equivalent to IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each component for undergraduate study and IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each component for postgraduate study, although individual courses can require higher scores. The University also accepts several alternative English qualifications.

MArch programmes are treated as postgraduate taught programmes for scholarship purposes and are therefore not eligible for the undergraduate award. Students must achieve an average of at least 60% and 120 credits in the previous academic year to continue receiving the £2,500 scholarship in later years.

International Postgraduate Scholarship Eligibility

For the £7,000 International Postgraduate Scholarship, you must

Begin a postgraduate taught degree in September 2027

Be permanently resident in, or have lived during the previous three years in, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Nigeria, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Türkiye, or Vietnam

Be classified as an overseas student for tuition fee purposes

Be self-funded

Study an eligible programme in full at the University of Sheffield

Study full-time

Accept your University offer by the required deadline

Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate programmes are not eligible. Crossways and Erasmus Mundus programmes are also excluded, as are programmes charging certain higher clinical fees. For the mainland China version, applicants must instead be permanent residents of China or have lived there for the previous three years and must accept their offer and pay the required postgraduate deposit by the specified deadline.

Chevening Scholarship Eligibility

To qualify for a Chevening Scholarship, you must

Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory

Commit to returning to your country of award for at least two years after completing the scholarship

Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for admission to a UK master’s programme

Have completed your undergraduate studies at least two years before the application deadline Have at least 2,800 hours of work experience gained after completing your undergraduate degree

Apply to three eligible UK master’s courses

Obtain at least one qualifying university offer by the Chevening offer deadline

For the current 2027–2028 cycle, applicants must have completed their undergraduate studies by October 2024 to satisfy the degree-timing requirement. Eligible work experience may include full-time employment, part-time employment, voluntary work, and paid or unpaid internships. You must also satisfy the academic and English-language requirements of your chosen University of Sheffield master’s programme.

That is all you need to do for the scholarship itself. There is no separate scholarship application form. If you satisfy the eligibility requirements, the tuition fee reduction is awarded automatically.

for the International Postgraduate Scholarship?

• Choose an eligible postgraduate taught programme at the University of Sheffield.
• Submit the University’s normal postgraduate admission application with the documents required by your course.
• Receive an offer from Sheffield.
• If you are from one of the ten countries or regions covered by the £7,000 scholarship, accept your offer by the July deadline.

There is no separate scholarship form, personal statement, or interview for the £7,000 award. Eligible students receive it automatically. Applicants from mainland China follow the same general process but must also pay the required postgraduate taught deposit by the earlier March deadline to receive the £3,000 award.
