Senior Specialist – Power Systems Research and Development

The Senior Specialist – Power Systems Research and Development supports the Senior Expert and the Director of Research and Development in conducting applied research, engineering assessments, and technical studies to improve the reliability, efficiency, safety, and modernization of DABS power systems. The position contributes to the analysis of generation interfaces, transmission and distribution networks, emerging technologies, and system performance; supports feasibility assessments and pilot initiatives; and prepares evidence-based technical recommendations for management consideration. The role is technical and advisory, with no direct supervisory responsibilities

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering

Master’s degree in a relevant specialization is an advantage

Minimum four years of relevant professional experience in power system engineering, network studies, utility technical analysis, or power systems research and development

Practical experience with power utility operations, technical feasibility studies, system performance evaluation, or grid modernization projects is an advantage

Sound understanding of electrical power systems, including transmission, distribution, substations, protection, and network performance

Ability to analyze technical data and apply engineering calculation, simulation, or power-system analysis tools relevant to assigned studies

Working knowledge of SCADA, smart-grid concepts, renewable energy integration, and relevant IEC/IEEE standards

Ability to prepare clear technical reports, specifications, study findings, and professional presentations

Strong analytical reasoning, problem-solving, accuracy, documentation, and multidisciplinary coordination skills

Effective communication in English and relevant national languages; ability to work independently and collaboratively under technical guidance

Power System Research and Technical Assessment

Collect, review, and analyze technical and operational data relating to power generation interfaces, transmission and distribution networks, substations, and associated equipment

Support engineering studies addressing network performance, losses, reliability, voltage regulation, loading, and recurring operational problems

Assist the Senior Expert in preparing technical assessments, calculations, and recommendations for network reinforcement, rehabilitation, and expansion

Review relevant international standards, technical publications, and utility practices and assess their applicability to DABS operating conditions

Feasibility Studies and System Modernization

Contribute to technical feasibility studies and options assessments for network upgrades, capacity enhancement, automation, and grid modernization

Research opportunities for smart-grid applications, SCADA and monitoring improvements, renewable energy integration, and appropriate energy technologies

Compare alternative technical solutions in terms of performance, practicality, maintainability, risks, and indicative implementation requirements

Assist in preparing concept notes, technical specifications, study scopes, and preliminary implementation recommendations for R&D initiatives

Testing, Pilots, and Performance Evaluation

Support the planning, technical documentation, and evaluation of research trials, pilot installations, and prototype or system-upgrade demonstrations

Develop or assist in preparing data-collection plans, test procedures, performance indicators, and technical evaluation reports, subject to applicable safety and approval procedures

Analyze test and field results, identify limitations, and propose evidence-based improvements before wider application

Coordinate with relevant DABS technical units to obtain operational feedback and validate the practicality of proposed solutions

Technical Coordination and Reporting

Work with transmission, distribution, generation, planning, operations, and other relevant teams to obtain inputs for research and development activities

Participate in technical discussions with suppliers, research institutions, and development partners to facilitate knowledge transfer and evaluation of new solutions

Prepare accurate technical reports, feasibility inputs, presentations, and records of assumptions, methods, findings, and recommendations for review by the Senior Expert and Directorate

Perform other related technical duties assigned by the reporting supervisor within the scope of the position and DABS procedures
